Prestigious Tournament Brings Big-Name Golfers to Rhode Island for 14th Consecutive Year
WOONSOCKET, Rhode Island (May 14, 2012) – Brad Faxon and Billy Andrade, PGA TOUR professionals and co-hosts of the CVS Caremark Charity Classic, today unveiled some of the top talent comprising the 2012 tournament field. Set for June 17-19 at Rhode Island Country Club, the tournament boasts an impressive roster of elite PGA, LPGA and Champions Tour professionals.
Joining the CVS Caremark Charity Classic field for the first time is the LPGA’s #1 ranked player Yani Tseng, who has held the top spot for more than one year. Tseng – who has posted three victories and seven top-10 finishes so far this year – is sure to add an exciting level of play to the event. Joining Tseng is a host of other top-tier LPGA stars including Lexi Thompson (ranked 24th in the word), Lorena Ochoa (four-time LPGA Rolex Player of the Year) and World Golf Hall of Fame member Annika Sorenstam (a top-winning LPGA player with 72 career victories to her name). Like Tseng, all three women are making their inaugural appearance at the CVS Caremark Charity Classic. Perennial favorite Juli Inkster will also be back for 2012.
Joining the LPGA players are several PGA Champions Tour professionals. Seasoned golfers Mark Calcavecchia, Corey Pavin and Peter Jacobsen will be playing in the tournament which is focused on raising funds for charities throughout New England. Other PGA, LPGA and Champions TOUR players will fill-out the 20-golfer roster in the coming weeks.
“The CVS Caremark Charity Classic brings an unmatched level of professional golf and excitement to Rhode Island, all to support the vital work of our non profit partners across the region,” said Eileen Howard Boone, Tournament Chairwoman, CVS Caremark Charity Classic. “We’re proud to have given back more than $15 million to hundreds of worthwhile charities and we salute the thousands of volunteers from our charity partners who make this tournament a success for fans and their organizations alike.”
The CVS Caremark Charity Classic uniquely offers sports enthusiasts the chance to enjoy world-class golf in a relaxed atmosphere while helping to support hundreds of New England area charities. Tournament week begins with the Pepsi Pro-Am on Sunday, June 17 followed by the two-day tournament on Monday, June 18-Tuesday, June, 19 at the Rhode Island Country Club.
The tournament format will be slightly altered for 2012, with Tuesday's play being changed to a scramble format. The change is in keeping with the event's commitment to introducing fresh ideas and tournament enhancements. The Pepsi Max Shootout, where the first-place team from both the Pepsi Pro-Am morning and afternoon rounds compete in a playoff during Monday’s professional tournament, is back for 2012. In addition, the pros will be competing for designated charities in the annual charity closest to the pin contest.
